As artistic director of the Plush festival in Dorset, the versatile cellist brings together all his different passions – for classical and contemporary chamber music, lieder, modern jazz, folk and world music. Adrian Brendel sees his annual visit to the International Musicians’ Seminar in Prussia Cove, founded by Sandor Vegh, as a perfect environment of great personal and artistic importance. Among his projects was a three-year collaboration with Sir Harrison Birtwistle that led to several premieres. His current collaborations range from Patti Smith and the Argentinian bandoneonist Marcelo Nisinman to the multi-instrumentalist Stian Carstensen who is also with us this year. Playing Dohnányi with the “normally very composed” Nash Ensemble, he inspired them to “let their hair down” while he was grinning from ear to ear, according to critics.
